Hilton's Volunteer Fire Department opens Busy Creek substation; asks county to consider equipment needs

Members of Hilton's Volunteer Fire Department told the Board the community has opened a new first‑attack substation at 6863 Busy Creek Road after neighbors donated materials, labor and equipment access to host one bay for a truck moved there on Oct. 24.
"Our substation is now ready to respond to calls," said David Musick, who described decades of volunteer service in the area and credited neighbors and department members for donating more than 500 man‑hours to make the facility usable. He outlined coverage (Station 2 covers about 69 rural square miles) and emphasized the effect on response times for remote parts of the county.
Chiefs and volunteers also asked the board to consider rising replacement costs for apparatus and turnout gear. Musick noted a seven‑unit fleet bought in 2001 cost $148,000 then and would now cost more than $450,000 to replace, while county equipment allocations for departments have not kept pace.
Supervisors thanked the volunteers and encouraged attendance at a station celebration; no new county funding was authorized during the meeting. Board members and staff noted the department’s work when reviewing upcoming budgets.
