Wake County invests $3.7 million to protect six farms, 21 more in pipeline

Vice Chair Don Myle outlined Wake County's Farmland Preservation Program and described a county partnership with Triangle Land Conservancy to use conservation easements to keep agricultural land out of development.
"We partner with Triangle Land Conservancy and use conservation easement to ensure their property is never developed," Myle said, adding that the county has invested $3,700,000 to protect six farms totaling nearly 400 acres. He said 21 more farms are moving through the process and could add another 1,400 acres to the program.
Myle framed farmland protection as both a food-security and fiscal priority, noting that for every dollar of revenue agriculture and forest land generates, the county spends about 24 cents on services. He said preserving farmland helps protect soil, water and air quality for future generations.
