Resident asks Swain County to form America250 NC committee; commissioners approve resolution

A Swain County resident asked the board on Dec. 2 to pass a resolution establishing a local committee to participate in America250 NC, the state’s nonpartisan program for planning 250th anniversary observances.
“My name is Cynthia Womble. I live in the Almond area of Swain County. I’m here to request that you as our county commissioners pass a resolution to form a Swain County committee for the America250 NC project,” Womble said during public presentation, adding she provided a draft resolution based on the State Department of Natural and Cultural Resources format and that the committee would not seek county money.
Womble described outreach to local partners — including the school system, library, the Swain County Tourism Development Authority, the Swain County Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Bryson City, the Swain County Genealogical and Historical Society and the Swain County Agricultural Fair — and said an informational and organizational meeting would be held Monday, Dec. 8 at noon in the administration building.
Commissioners moved and approved the resolution during the work session. Womble said she would forward the signed resolution to state staff so Swain County can access educational resources, visual aids and potential small grant opportunities offered by the state program.
Next steps: Womble said the local committee will hold an organizational meeting on Dec. 8; commissioners did not commit county funds and the resolution authorizes the county to be listed for state registration of a local committee.
