Beaufort County to use NCACC help, sets target to hire new manager by June 30

Emery told the board that counties typically choose between an internal HR-led search, hiring a private executive search firm, or using the association’s services. “100 voices carries much more weight in Raleigh than each individual can individually,” Emery said, urging the board to use professional outreach and clear timelines to attract qualified candidates.
Commissioners discussed candidate profiles, confidentiality for applicants and options for interim arrangements. One commissioner proposed a goal to have a new manager start by June 30; the board moved, seconded and approved that timetable unanimously. The board then voted to engage NCACC to assist with advertising, developing a job profile, and advising on interview questions and screening.
Commissioners and staff said they will coordinate the county attorney and HR to ensure confidentiality and to decide the degree of NCACC involvement — from document preparation to full-service assistance. Emery estimated that private national search firms may charge in the range of $30,000 to $50,000, but noted the association provides assistance through membership services.
Next steps: staff will work with NCACC to develop recruitment materials and a timeline and report back to the board as the process proceeds.
