Madison County commissioners approved a slate of budget transfers and grant‑related actions during their Dec. 15 meeting, including funds for school infrastructure, insurance reserves and emergency services training.
Finance staff presented several committee recommendations that the commission approved by voice vote: a $450,000 transfer to the employee insurance fund to cover claims; a $750,000 allocation toward East Elementary School infrastructure; smaller transfers to align opioid grant funds in juvenile court; and a $327,127.27 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) award to fund a paramedic school program. Commissioners also approved rollover funds related to a local parks LPRF grant and an EMA disaster reimbursement.
The sheriff’s office will receive $174,505 from federal equitable sharing funds to purchase a drone and two fully equipped K‑9 vehicles, as approved by the commission. During committee reports, the mayor noted the county had received a $260,000 seed contribution from an entity referred to as "Project Sam," an Australian company still in negotiations; the board approved moving $187,500 of that amount to the Tennessee Valley Authority as a matching contribution toward a childcare capacity study and to support an eventual RFP for building childcare capacity in the county.
Commissioners described the paramedic grant and other funding as responses to operational needs and said the funds will support training and infrastructure priorities. The budget committee’s recommendations were recorded as committee recommendations and approved by the full board.
