Richmond County reviews hazardous-waste program and considers a spring collection

County staff summarized the results of the Oct. 18 household hazardous waste and e-waste event and asked the board to consider whether to add a spring collection.
Staff reported 83 vehicles participated in the hazardous-waste drop-off, weighing about 8,010 pounds; e-waste totaled about 896 pounds; the on-site shred truck served 27 participants and prescription take-back recorded 19 pickups. Vendor costs for hazardous and e-waste handling were estimated at about $11,000, with the shredding truck costing about $4,500.
Board members discussed the timing of the event — many localities hold events in both spring and fall — and considered a simplified spring offering that would accept household hazardous waste but omit some services to reduce vendor costs. Staff agreed to explore options with Soil and Water and other counties and bring back cost estimates.
No final budget changes were approved at the meeting; staff will return with options and potential schedules for an additional event.
