Sheriff reports 42 in custody, $84,000 in off-site housing costs and rising animal-control workload

Speaker 9, presenting the report, said there were 42 people in custody that morning and that the county spent about $84,000 last month to house inmates in other facilities. The office logged roughly 4,500 transport miles and noted 1,105 9-1-1 calls over the reporting period. Speaker 9 said the county had 57 jail denials and had three females temporarily housed in Angelina County; the county is working to secure a contract for that housing.
On animal control, Speaker 9 reported 33 animals taken in during the month and said five were euthanized; the office lacks an on-staff euthanasia license and must rely on an external veterinarian for that service. Speaker 9 also said parts of the published report contained outdated or incorrect information and promised corrections in next month's packet.
Speaker 9 disputed circulating assertions that the sheriff's office had kept people jailed on class C offenses for several days, saying such claims were inaccurate and should stop. The report included additional operational details such as citation and warning counts and grand-jury indictments the sheriff's office recorded.
The court did not take separate action on the report during the meeting; Speaker 9 invited questions and said the corrected report will appear next month.
