County's Richmond representative previews governor's budget and state priorities

Heidi Hurst, the countys Richmond representative, briefed the Henry County Board of Supervisors Dec. 16 on the incoming administration and the start of the 2026 General Assembly session.
Hurst said three statewide officers will be sworn in Jan. 17 and noted a Democratic expansion in the House of Delegates. She called attention to the governors budget release scheduled for 9:30 a.m. the next day and said county priorities include funding to support operations at Mayo River State Park. Hurst said her office will pursue shepherding any budget amendment through the General Assembly and continue work on K–12 rebenchmarking, regional economic projects such as Commonwealth Crossings and the Blue Ridge Innovation Corridor, and maintaining local authority in land-use decisions as state-level energy and environmental legislation progresses.
Board members asked questions about state support for public safety and how the countys priorities will be advanced in Richmond. Hurst said the countys prior engagement has positioned staff well for outreach to newly named department leads and legislators.
