Allegany County committee approves budget amendments that treasurer says cut levy by $50,000

Allegany County Treasurer Terry Ross told the Ways and Means Committee on Dec. 10 that a second set of tentative budget amendments would ‘‘result in an additional $50,000 decrease in the levy’’ and keep the budget under the state cap by ‘‘about $110,000.’’ Ross said the package would be incorporated into the final budget and that the county would move forward with adoption next week if the committee approved the changes.
Ross reported earlier in the meeting that three parcels from a recent tax auction — offered to second bidders after the first bidders failed to complete payment — have now submitted money and paperwork. He asked the committee for a resolution to award deeds to those successful second bidders; the committee approved the resolution by voice vote.
In presenting the budget changes, Ross gave figures from county calculations as read in the record: a levy amount stated as ‘‘$31,000,006.93 $4.26’’ and a tax rate stated as ‘‘$12.20.’’ The transcript formatting of the levy figure is unclear; the committee did not request further numeric clarification during the meeting. Ross said some departments had already submitted maintenance-of-effort (MOE) documents this morning and that small additional requests could be returned later for adjustment if needed.
Committee members asked no substantive follow-up questions on the levy package; a voice vote approved the amendments.
The committee will consider the final budget for adoption at next week’s meeting, according to Ross.
