Marquette County committee approves 2026 state RMA as road-repair costs strain account
Summary
A county committee approved the 2026 state RMA agreement after staff warned the state-maintained RMA is nearly depleted following heavy asphalt repairs. The $990,600 agreement is roughly $75,000 higher than 2025; members approved the package by voice vote.

Speaker 2 (role not specified) told the committee the county’s state RMA account was “just over $17,000 expended” in October and that recent asphalt repairs left the RMA nearly depleted. "Technically, we've got $54,001.94 remaining in our RMA, but we still have to take out the equipment storage and the winter readiness," Speaker 2 said, noting those draws will further reduce available funds.
The committee considered the proposed 2026 state RMA agreement, which Speaker 2 said is $990,600 — about $75,000 higher than the 2025 agreement — and requested approval. After brief questions about the timing of state work on I-39, Speaker 1 moved and a colleague seconded approval. A voice vote followed and the motion was carried.
Speaker 2 told members that asphalt repairs earlier in the year contributed most to the overdrawn asphalt line, saying asphalt repairs showed an overrun of about $84,000 versus their projected allocation. The presentation included a broader budget snapshot: county October expenses were cited at $168,003.51 with line items for mowing, drainage and patching; townships saw about $225,004.93 in October work.
The committee did not record a roll-call tally in the transcript; the approval was recorded by voice as “motion’s carried.” Speaker 2 said reimbursements between state and county cost pools occur but the RMA payment must be paid out of the state-managed account.
The committee’s next procedural step is to submit the signed 2026 RMA paperwork and continue routine financial monitoring; staff also flagged that winter readiness and equipment storage charges will further affect the RMA balance.
