County hears update on Santa's Hills/Octagon House project, staff say tourism could bring $1.5M annually in later phases

The project lead said the effort has grown from restoring a local landmark into a regional cultural experience center supported by a feasibility study from Virginia Tech’s Center for Economic and Community Engagement and grant funding awarded through the Paul Bruhn grant program administered by the Department of Historic Resources (funds routed via the National Park Service). “We were awarded the prestigious Paul Bruhn grant through the Department of Historic Resources,” the presenter said, adding the funding should allow phases to open within six months to a year once received.
Staff said later phases could bring roughly $1.5 million per year in visitor‑related spending to the local economy (restaurants, lodging, events) though they emphasized the project will remain a multi‑phase, long‑term effort rather than a one‑time build.
Presenters also said they are coordinating with Virginia Tourism and state and federal representatives to raise visibility for the project. Supervisors thanked staff and local volunteers and noted continued work is required on planning, fundraising and tourism partnerships before major revenue expectations are realized.
No formal board action was taken; the update was presented for information and moved into committee and planning processes.
