The morning Sutnick public-comment period and later commission discussion were dominated by a call for a state audit and a heated exchange between Representative Fabian Basabe and members of the Miami Beach City Commission.
Representative Basabe and several residents urged a state Auditor General review to examine whether the city is properly spending taxpayer funds and to investigate contracting and grant decisions. "This audit cost taxpayers nothing," Basabe said during public comment, adding that the Auditor General "does that" work and would look at contracts, lawsuits and whether taxpayer dollars were spent wisely.
Several commissioners welcomed an audit but rejected what they characterized as broad, unsubstantiated accusations made from the dais and in public messaging. Mayor Ralph Minor and multiple commissioners said the city produces a Comprehensive Annual Financial Report but that an Auditor General audit would probe governance and decisions; they urged that allegations be documented. "If it's true, back it up, provide some evidence," the mayor said during a forceful rebuttal to the representative's comments.
The exchange included calls for transparency and cooperation with state auditors; city staff and the city attorney committed to full cooperation with an audit. Commissioners also emphasized protections for staff and pointed to the city's Inspector General and previous audits as part of the city's public-accountability framework. The matter remained unresolved in the meeting other than the commission's agreement to cooperate with the state Auditor General should an audit proceed.
