County recognizes therapeutic recreation program and Devin Burnett for statewide award

Roanoke County’s Parks, Recreation & Tourism department was recognized at the Dec. 16 Board of Supervisors meeting for winning the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society’s best new program award.
Alan Hayes, director of parks, recreation and tourism, described the TRS Nightclub program — an adapted social event with dimmed lighting, a professional DJ, mocktails and other accommodations that create an accessible nightlife experience for individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities. Hayes said the program and the therapeutic recreation team have provided more than 100 adapted recreation programs over decades and praised staff for creativity and service.
Board members congratulated Devin Burnett and TRS staff, recounted positive participant feedback from past events (including the Valentine’s dance) and invited staff to return for in‑person recognition at future events.
