The Whitley County Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously approved a variance on Nov. 25 allowing Thrills RV to install two identification signs at its Columbia City site near East Lincoln Way and US 30.
Nathan, county planning staff, explained the request sought relief from the 300‑square‑foot total sign area limit because the operation proposes two separate identification signs — one visible from US 30 and a smaller directional sign on East Lincoln Way. He said each sign, considered individually, would comply with height and setback standards and that the separation (more than 600 feet apart) reduces the potential for driver distraction.
Petitioner Jared Hosteller told the board the Lincoln Way sign is intended as a small directional marker to direct customers into the site while the US 30 sign serves as a primary identification for passing traffic. He said the East Lincoln Way sign would be modest in size and intended only to guide vehicles into the driveway.
No members of the public spoke for or against the variance during the public hearing. Board members then moved to approve the variance; the motion carried unanimously.
The approval allows Thrills RV to install two identification signs as described, subject to any applicable sign‑code standards for individual sign height and lighting.
The board did not attach additional conditions beyond conformance with the sign code and standard BZA procedures.
