County staff report New World of Sports site, and USDA offers $50,000 planning grant

Madison County staff reported two economic-development items Dec. 16: a company expansion and a grant opportunity to update local planning.
Staff said an entity described as a Europe-based sports equipment company intends to occupy a speculative building at 1800 State Route 42 (corner of 42 and 29) in Jefferson Township and use it as its North American headquarters; staff estimated the project could create about 55 jobs but said operational details remain to be confirmed.
Separately, staff advised the board of a USDA grant opportunity offering $50,000 for strategic-planning or comprehensive-plan updates, with an application deadline the week of Feb. 27 and award notifications expected within one or two months. Staff recommended pursuing the $50,000 to help fund an update of the county—economic-development strategic plan and noted consultants under consideration to lead the work.
Commissioners said they supported applying for the grant and asked staff to follow up on eligible uses and whether townships could participate in portions of the project. The county will proceed with application steps if the board provides authorization.
