Judge: election equipment tested; Val Verde to discuss bridge referendums after mixed results

The Val Verde County Commissioners Court approved election procedural manuals covering voter registration policy, statements of residence and ID verification, and said the documents may be revised in future meetings.
Commissioner Vasquez moved to approve the manuals and Commissioner Flores seconded; the motion passed 5-0. During discussion, commissioners asked whether naturalized citizens could register; county staff confirmed legal residents and naturalized citizens are eligible to register and vote when they can demonstrate required identification.
In his comments, the county judge summarized results from three referendum questions on a proposed bridge. The judge said one referendum saw 1,794 votes against and 1,602 in favor; another (north alignment) showed 1,743 against and 1,602 in favor; and the third (south alignment) recorded 13,024 in favor and 2,031 against (transcript figures reported by the judge). The judge said the results were not as clear-cut as expected and that the court would place an item on a future agenda for further discussion.
The judge also told the court that voting equipment had been tested prior to the election and that testing results were posted for public inspection. "I have all the confidence in the world that totals are true and correct," the judge said.
The court did not take further action on bridge planning at this meeting but scheduled a follow-up agenda item in two weeks to consider next steps and stakeholder input.
