Anita Adkins, supervisor with the Onslow County Department of Social Services, described the newly formed CARE Team (Client Assistance, Resolution, Engagement) as a group of experienced caseworkers dedicated to resolving ongoing client issues, answering incoming calls, staffing outreach events and operating satellite locations.
Adkins said the CARE Team was created to address gaps beyond initial application processing, assisting clients with changes in income or household composition and guiding people through the life of a case for programs such as food and nutrition and Medicaid. Outreach locations include Richlands Community Outreach, the main library branch, the Swansboro branch (Monday evenings) and monthly presence at senior services.
Adkins said the team began a gradual rollout on Oct. 1 and assumed official duties on Nov. 1; she reported increased first-time applicants and more frequent change reports from households. During a recent federal shutdown that delayed benefit issuance, the CARE Team coordinated with food pantries and soup kitchens so families maintained access to food.
Adkins encouraged residents to visit the department at 612 College Street, call the main number ((910) 455-4145), or review the department website for program information and outreach schedules.
