Public works updates, winter operations and holiday recycling plan in Connellsville

Public works and other staff provided operational updates and community announcements at the Dec. 16 Connellsville City Council meeting.

City staff approved allowing Superior Mulch to place two 30-yard dumpsters in a city parking lot from Dec. 29, 2025, through Jan. 12, 2026, at no cost to the city to collect live Christmas trees for mulch; council discussed placing the dumpsters at the Cameron public-park parking area to avoid blocking other dumpsters and traffic (SEG 112-169).

The public works report covered November activity, routine park checks and heavy seasonal work. Staff discussed the Pittsburgh Street project and concerns about contractor timing, access around the hospital and upcoming water-main replacements that will enable paving (SEG 875-932; SEG 926-932). Staff reported they received and delivered 100 tons of material promptly and plan continued patching and winter maintenance (SEG 978-991).

Council members thanked public works crews for snow and ice responses during recent storms, noting a small crew worked extended shifts to keep main streets passable (SEG 1004-1012). The mayor and council also promoted community events including David Porterfield’s model-train display at Somerset Trust Train Station and the Polar Bear Plunge on Jan. 1 at Yawgm River Park, with attendees encouraged to bring canned goods for Bill Swan Food Pantry (SEG 394-406; SEG 418-424).

The council endorsed the tree-collection plan and directed staff to coordinate placement and signage to ensure emergency-vehicle access during placement. Public works will continue to monitor contractor work and street closures to minimize impacts on emergency routes near the hospital.
