District and Chartwells report rising meal participation, local sourcing and new stations

Chartwells regional manager Diana Cook and district food-service director Gwen Jones presented a year-end review to the finance committee, reporting modest revenue gains and programmatic expansions as the partnership enters its fifth year.

Cook said lunch counts increased roughly 3.5% from the prior year while breakfast counts rose about 14%, calling the breakfast growth "significant." She added the contract guarantee last year was $160,000 and that higher sales and catering revenue helped invest in food service operations and renovations. "Our breakfast counts went up 14% from prior year," Cook said.

The presentation emphasized menu development and local sourcing: Cook said the vendor is working to bring in more Pennsylvania produce (apples, potatoes cited) where supplier quality, safety and insurance requirements allow. Gwen Jones outlined programs such as Discovery Kitchen (elementary sampling events), Mood Boost, Global Eats, Student Choice voting at lunch and kindergarten pizza/chef demonstrations, and highlighted new kitchen and serving-line renovations completed at multiple schools.

Chartwells noted that after five years with the vendor, Pennsylvania Department of Education rules require the district to issue an RFP; the presenters said they expect to publish the RFP in early December and bring a recommended vendor back in winter or early spring.

Board members and administrators praised the partnership's flexibility during renovations and its role in using meal-time as a classroom for nutrition education. The finance committee welcomed the reported gains and asked staff to proceed with the RFP process.
