North Montco technical center reports high demand, certifications and new partnerships

A North Montco Technical Career Center representative briefed the committee on enrollment, certification outcomes and expansion challenges. The presenter said North Montco serves primarily grades 10–12 (tenth-grade students attend in the morning; 11th–12th graders in the afternoon) and reported enrollment around 149 students across the three grades.
The presenter described industry certifications as an important outcome — listing ServSafe, welding credentials and OSHA among the common credentials students earn — and explained the NOCTI end-of-program assessments include a theory multiple‑choice component and a performance component assessed by industry subject-matter experts.
Board members repeatedly raised program demand and wait lists. The North Montco representative said many programs are full and a number have wait lists, with health care, welding and construction trades among the most in demand. The center is exploring alternative scheduling and off-site programming and relies on occupational advisory committees of industry experts to help shape curriculum and equipment purchases.
Multiple board members praised the technical center’s leadership and noted the growing importance of skilled trades, especially as local labor markets change. The presentation concluded with plans to recruit students for a new public‑safety training partnership in Norristown that would offer seniors in protective services opportunities to earn multiple certifications (firefighter I, EMT and others) starting next year.
