Lona Kelly, representing the Harvey County Department on Aging, told commissioners Dec. 23 that a local meal provider (Everfull) will stop service Dec. 31 and that Trios expects to have a full kitchen operation and provide hot bulk meals by February. Kelly said the county is the only local government in the area not directly supporting older-adult nutrition and asked the commission to consider short-term county support while sites and cities pursue longer-term options.
Kelly outlined a bridge plan of frozen meals and limited hot service from neighboring providers for the first two weeks of January and said Trios will provide hot bulk meals starting in February. Commissioners estimated a possible county contribution of about $5,000 per site (four sites mentioned) for a total near $20,000. Several commissioners expressed concern about using unbudgeted property-tax dollars and suggested a three-month subsidy be considered while cities and community nonprofits seek alternatives.
The board did not take a formal vote but directed staff and Kelly to continue exploring creative funding solutions and to return with budget details.
