The Crawford County Commission voted to adopt bylaws and a resolution to join K Work, a multi-county workers' compensation cooperative, with coverage to begin Jan. 1, 2026.
County staff walked commissioners through the key provisions of the K Work bylaws and the resolution: the cooperative is set up to provide pooled workers' compensation and risk-management services among five or more counties or municipalities; member contributions may include an annual premium and additional assessments if the cooperative's board determines extra contributions are necessary in a catastrophic year; the agreement must be filed with the commissioner of insurance, the register of deeds and the secretary of state; and members must designate an elected official as a representative and one or more alternates by majority vote.
Staff noted that existing claims dating to 2025 will remain with the county's current carrier (Travelers/EMC arrangements described in the presentation), while the cooperative would handle new claims beginning Jan. 1. The commission reviewed the bid premium and the K Work certificate of coverage for Jan. 1, 2026 to Jan. 1, 2027, and authorized a disbursement check to meet the cooperative's initial requirements.
A motion to accept K Work and authorize the chairman to sign the resolution carried by voice vote. The commission also approved a separate appointment to the juvenile corrections advisory board: at staff request, the board appointed Judge Mazurek (the transcript records the motion referring to Judge John Missouri) to the panel and authorized the chair to sign the appointment paperwork.
