Avon Grove board rejects bid to genericize future committee listings, approves calendar 9–0

At its Dec. 5 reorganization meeting, the Avon Grove School District board voted on the district calendar and debated an amendment to list future committee meetings generically. A board member moved that, after January, calendar entries should be labeled only as 'committees' rather than by specific committee names. Supporters said the change would reflect uncertainty until a planned January retreat; opponents said it was premature and could confuse the public and complicate statutory notice and advertising practices.
Legal counsel and staff advised the board on options and notice practices: the Sunshine Act and district practice require timely public notice, and changes after initial advertisement could require a second round of public notice. Counsel said the board should at minimum advertise dates and general categories now and update names later if the board decides to change them at the retreat.
After deliberations, the board voted on the amendment and recorded that it failed 5–4. The board then voted on the calendar as posted; the main motion passed unanimously with a recorded 9–0 vote. Board members said committee names and the detailed committee structure will be discussed and finalized at a January retreat. Staff will advertise the approved calendar and handle any follow-up notices if the board later changes committee names.
