Booker Boyer, Lincoln County director of building and grounds, asked the Board of Commissioners on Jan. 5 to consider a programmable LED lighting system for the older courthouse facade that would provide security illumination and be programmable for holidays and events. "We can change it up to 20 different colors," Booker said, noting the system can be controlled from a tablet and, in clear white, would improve night‑time camera visibility.
Boyer contrasted that option with a quote for Victorian‑style pillar lights: "That was $20,000 for three of them," he said, adding that a recessed LED system installed under the building ledges could wash the façade with light for a fraction of that price and avoid aesthetic intrusion on the historic fabric. He suggested lower‑cost approaches to cap interior maintenance pits so the building could be used for tenant storage or other revenue uses.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about fixture placement, whether lights would shine up or down (Booker said they would shine down), and whether the proposed approach would provide adequate security coverage for sidewalks and dark spots. Several commissioners supported requesting bids and more precise pricing before committing to either option. Chair asked Booker to return with cost estimates and layout diagrams for the board to review.
No formal decision was taken Jan. 5; commissioners directed staff to gather pricing and to return with a proposal.
