District expands elementary standards-based grading; Gockley K–1 live, Steckel and Zephyr to follow

District staff said Gockley Elementary implemented standards-based grading for kindergarten and first grade this year and that the district's K–12 committee is working toward broader elementary revisions by 2030. Staff described training for teacher leaders, family guides and progress-report changes intended to provide clearer feedback about specific skills (for example, early literacy components such as rhyming and letter-sound recognition). "We have our website that is put together, our standards based parent and family guide as well," a presenter said.
Steckel and Zephyr were identified as next in the rollout. Presenters said Steckel staff have been preparing and that Zephyr staff volunteered to accelerate their timeline to move in parallel with Steckel so families at different schools will see consistent reporting practice. Board members asked about parental reaction and feasibility; presenters said parent feedback to date has been largely positive and that the district will pilot changes and coordinate training to limit disruption.
Staff emphasized the change is focused on elementary reporting; secondary grading will remain on traditional scales and the district will use its grading handbook to address any secondary inconsistencies.
