District staff explained how Shawnee Heights will implement the state requirement that students earn two post-secondary assets to meet graduation criteria for the classes impacted beginning with the class of 2028.
Presenters described multiple pathways students can use to earn each asset: 40 or more hours of school‑sponsored community service (tracked via a form signed by a school sponsor), industry-recognized certifications such as programs at Washburn Tech, the Seal of Biliteracy (commonly English plus another language), ACT/WorkKeys certificates, Advanced Placement scores of 3 or higher, nine or more dual-enrollment college credit hours, and attendance-based credit (95% attendance for a year applied to freshmen last year). CTE scholar recognition, scout awards and sustained participation in two activities also count. Staff noted many options are junior/senior-year experiences; some opportunities (internships, senior exit interviews, career supports) need further development and management.
District staff said more work remains to operationalize tracking; PowerSchool integration is planned so students and parents can see progress. The board was advised that the district has shared a user-friendly document with families and that other area districts have used the district’s template as they work to meet the mandate.
