The Solanco School District board on Jan. 5 recognized December and January students of the month from multiple elementary schools, praising pupils for responsibility, kindness and academic growth.
Dr. Bliss opened the presentations by explaining the format and inviting families to the stage. Mr. Boyd introduced Emmett Chadwick, a fifth grader at Claremont, saying, “Emmett is a student who truly exhibits the Sligo expectations of respect, responsibility, courage, and kindness on a daily basis.” Emmett’s teacher highlighted his focus, willingness to help classmates and demonstrated growth in mathematics.
Claremont’s second honoree, second grader Dawson Holzauer, was praised by his nominating teacher, Mrs. Ortloff, for leadership and consistent work habits. At Providence Elementary, Allison Thorpe presented first grader James Shiflett for kindness and dependability; Thorpe said James “is a student who makes sure to say hi to his peers” and frequently helps others.
Other recognitions included Kaylee Winters for classroom participation and perseverance, Sadie Grego for respect and kindness (presenters noted it was also her birthday), and Quarryville Elementary students Isaiah Buffington and Charlotte Donahue for classroom leadership and effort. Teachers read nomination letters describing specific examples of each student’s behavior, work ethic and contributions to the classroom community.
Dr. Bliss closed the segment by explaining photography logistics for the newspaper and district website and inviting the recognized students to walk past the board for handshakes. The recognitions concluded with board members commending staff and families for supporting students’ success.
