The Craven County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 5 approved a budget amendment of $80,415 to replace the pump, pump column and shaft at the Davis well, which staff said was originally installed in 1992 and showed vibration in the motor bearings during inspection.

Elliot Thomas told commissioners the pump is located on Dover Road in the Jasper area and is part of the well field serving northwest Craven. "Based on these findings, the recommendation is to replace the pump, which was originally installed 1992, along with its pump column and its pump shaft," Thomas said. He added that parts have a lead time of roughly two to three weeks and reinstallation would take a few days after parts arrive.

Commissioners asked whether the county's regular contractor (CRU) is the only vendor able to do the work; Thomas said other contractors are capable but the county is under contract with CRU for annual inspections and they are familiar with the system. Commissioners voted by roll call to approve the amendment.

The board's approval authorizes staff to proceed with procurement and schedule replacement; Thomas said the outage period should be limited to parts lead time and a few days of on‑site work.
