Mill Valley steering committee lays out schedule, Old Mill roof restoration and plaque program for 125th anniversary

Steering committee members Pam Keon and Joe Murray presented details of Mill Valleys 125th anniversary celebration and the committees plans to leave a legacy through a restored Old Mill roof and a new heritage-plaque program.

Keon said the committee prioritized accessibility and inclusivity: many activities will be free, parade participation will not charge an entry fee, and volunteers and nonprofit partners will be widely recruited. She said the Old Mill roof restoration is near completion, and staff and partners will dedicate the roof on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 12:30, with the State Historic Preservation Officer expected to attend. Keon described the three-day program (parade, Curtain Theatre performances, plaza music and nonprofit tables), special exhibits including a commissioned short film about Mill Valley history, a time capsule dedication planned for Oct. 7, and a program enabling owners of homes over 100 years old to purchase heritage plaques (rollout in the fourth quarter).

Keon told council the steering committee worked closely with the parks and recreation department, the chamber, restaurant partners, and a long list of volunteers and community members; she thanked named contributors including Susan Lopes and historical researcher Joyce Kleiner. She also confirmed photographs will be printed for inclusion in the time capsule rather than relying on digital formats that may become unreadable.

Council members praised the committee and asked logistical questions about Sequoia Theatre reservations and the timing of Rita Abramss on-stage song. The proclamation formally recognizing Mill Valleys 125th anniversary (date of incorporation cited as Sept. 1, 1900) was read into the record and will be placed in the city history room after mayoral signature.
