The Pequannock Township Board of Education met Jan. 5 for its organizational and regular meeting, swore in newly elected and re-elected members, elected officers and approved a slate of routine consent items before moving into executive session to discuss student matters.
Board Secretary Gordon Gibbs opened the meeting, read the Open Public Meeting Act compliance statement and announced the results of the November election: Daniel Esposito (4,648 votes), Gregory Michalek (4,271 votes), Gregory McSweeney (4,091 votes) and 117 write-ins, for a total of 13,427 votes. The oath of office was administered to the new and re-elected members.
The board conducted officer elections. A nomination was made for Brian Sack for president; the roll-call vote that followed is recorded in the meeting transcript and the record subsequently contains a congratulatory acknowledgement to "Mister Senek." Danielle Esposito (recorded in the oath as both "Daniel" and "Danielle" in different parts of the transcript) was nominated and elected vice president by roll call.
Members were assigned to standing committees and delegate roles for the year: FFA, PMC, CIS, policy, board effectiveness and negotiations committees were named; delegates to CPAC/Education Foundation, Morris County Educational Services, NJSBA and Joint Township Services were appointed; and a mentorship assignment was recorded.
The board approved multiple consent-item bundles by roll-call vote with no substantive discussion recorded: policy items (PO 8-26 through P 10-26), FFA items (FFA 93-26 through FFA 109-26), PMC items (PMC 116-26 through PMC 119-26) and a set of "Other" items listed as O-04-26. The meeting record shows the motion on O-04-26 carried with two abstentions recorded; other consent motions were recorded as carrying with all voting in favor.
There were two opportunities for public comment; the minutes and the chair reported there were no members of the public who spoke.
Before adjourning to executive session, several board members offered New Year remarks and thanked staff who worked during the holiday break. The board then voted to move into executive session to discuss student matters; the chair stated no action would be taken in public and the meeting was adjourned from there.
Corrections and notes on the record: the meeting transcript contains inconsistent spellings for some attendee names (for example, the transcript shows both "Daniel Esposito" and "Danielle Esposito" in different places, and multiple variations on other surnames). This article uses the district name as Pequannock Township Board of Education. Where the meeting record clearly identifies a speaker and role, the article attributes remarks accordingly; where the transcript is internally inconsistent about the precise spelling of a name, the article reports names "as recorded" in the meeting minutes.
