The Floyd County Board of Supervisors reorganized for 2026 on Jan. 5, electing its chair and vice chair, setting regular meeting dates and times for the year, and addressing how meetings will be handled in inclement weather.

Supervisors nominated and voted on leadership for the year; the board approved the chair election and likewise filled the vice chair post. The board set its regular schedule to continue daytime meetings on the second Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., with night meetings from May 1 through Oct. 31 beginning at 7 p.m., and November 1 through April 30 meetings beginning at 6 p.m. Members also approved a plan that makes the Thursday of the same week the automatic backup date if weather forces the Tuesday meeting to be postponed and gave the chair authority to cancel and reschedule the fallback if bad weather persists.

The board adopted Robert’s Rules of Order as the meeting protocol. Supervisors approved the meeting agenda with two additions: a burn ban ordinance and a designated board time item.

During board time supervisors debated lengthening the public-comment period from four minutes to five or six. Legal counsel and several board members noted public-comment norms and FOIA considerations; the board concluded that four minutes remains an appropriate default but directed staff and the chair to use the agenda process to place longer-presenting citizens on the agenda when more time is warranted. The board also asked staff to ensure correspondence and written submissions be included in the board packet.

The meeting concluded with routine business including disbursement approvals and committee appointments. The board adjourned after completing the reorganization business.
