Superintendent outlines strategic-plan rollout, e-learning policy and math curriculum review

Superintendent Heil updated the board on the district’s strategic plan and related operational work, and trustees discussed calendar and curriculum priorities.
Heil said community feedback had favored using compass-style branding and that the mission and vision language will remain unchanged; staff plan a refreshed booklet and a rollout around the new year with potential board adoption at a future meeting. "I think around the new year would be a great time to kind of roll out," Heil said.
Board members debated whether to keep e-learning days or revert to traditional snow days. Trustees noted statutory student-contact hour requirements and expressed differing views: some favored keeping e-learning days to preserve instructional time while others wanted to add in-person days to increase contact time. Heil said the current calendar has about 20 hours of "wiggle room" and staff are drafting standardized e-learning documents — FAQs and checklists for elementary and secondary levels — and will consult with the teachers’ union on an MOU.
Separately, the board heard plans for an expedited preK–12 mathematics curriculum review led by district staff and a committee with representation from all grade levels. The aim is to narrow options to one to three publishers by early spring, run pilots where needed, involve teachers and the community in in-depth reviews, and then return recommendations to the curriculum committee and the board.
