Van De Graff resident tells Kiski Area SD board son lacks math supports, asks for help

Dawn Bailey, a resident of Van De Graff Borough, spoke during the public comment period at the Kiski Area School District board meeting on Oct. 22, saying her eighth-grade son has struggled in math and that repeated requests for help yielded insufficient support.
Bailey said she had raised concerns with assistant principal John Cortazzo, staff member Claypool and with the superintendent and the board but felt dismissed. She described informal attempts to address the issue — placing the student in front of class and using a planner — that she said were not implemented or did not produce results. Bailey said she has asked multiple times for the math teacher to contact her and that the teacher did not respond until another staff member intervened on her son’s behalf. “I should not have to beg for a book. I should not have to beg for education,” she told the board.
The presiding officer acknowledged Bailey’s concerns, said the board appreciated the comments and that they would be taken to heart for follow-up.
The board did not announce a public response, personnel action or a specific follow-up at the meeting. Bailey’s remarks were given the allotted public-comment time and recorded in the meeting transcript.
