Board adopts course changes and affirms use of rolling GPA for NHS; debate over applying PIAA attendance rules to dances continues

The Ambridge Area School District board voted Nov. 19 to adopt two Education & Technology items after a motion to reconsider earlier votes. The board also received confirmation that rolling cumulative GPA reports can be produced for scholarship, college admission and National Honor Society review.
Earlier in the meeting items 1 and 2 had failed because multiple board members said they did not have printed copies to review. After staff provided clarification and confirmed highlighted changes were distributed, the board voted 5–3 to adopt the items (affirmative votes recorded from Faragonia, Spitzko, Kehoe, Romasco and Carpenter; Fisher, Kovacevic and Scott voted no). The chair noted the adoption requires an affirmative vote of five members under district policy and the school code.
Doctor Zubcic explained the district’s rolling GPA reporting and showed screenshots of how a rolling weighted GPA can appear higher than a standard transcript value. "We would be able to provide for scholarship, college admission, and NHS opportunities the rolling GPA report so students can be seen in their best light," Zubcic said. Administration confirmed guidance and NHS sponsors will receive rolling‑GPA reports (CSV/Excel) when needed and that guidance will be directed to use the higher rolling GPA on requests.
Board members expressed procedural concerns about changes being distributed close to the meeting and asked for printed highlighted versions to be provided before future votes. Missus Scott said she could not vote on items earlier because she had not received printed copies in time: "I need things printed out for me to read them." The administration agreed to provide printed materials for board members and to post updated course materials.
Separately, the board debated whether to align dance attendance rules with Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) standards (half‑day attendance, commonly implemented by arriving by 11 a.m.). Several members supported using the PIAA half‑day standard for dances to promote consistency with athletics; others urged clear advance notice before any handbook change. The solicitor advised the board that the item was not sufficiently described on the agenda for action tonight and recommended administration review existing handbook language and return recommendations at the earliest appropriate meeting. No formal policy change was taken at this meeting.
The board asked administration to examine the handbook language and, if necessary, bring a clarified agenda item to the next meeting so the board can consider a formal change with proper notice.
