Oak Park City Council approved an annual agreement with the Michigan Humane Society for animal-control sheltering and medical services for 2026.
City staff said the city enters this contract annually to ensure animals taken into custody by animal control receive sheltering and care. "Annually every year, we enter into a contract with the Michigan Humane Society," staff said, and the city attorney has reviewed the 2026 agreement.
During discussion, council members sought clarification on care and transfer protocols. Staff said the Michigan Humane Society is a no-kill facility; if an animal is infectious or otherwise unsuitable for admission the society may decline intake and the city has a contract with the Oakland County Animal Shelter to provide euthanasia where necessary under county policy.
Council moved and approved the agreement by roll call. Council Member Whitehead, Mayor McClellan and Council Member Radnor recorded yes votes and the motion carried.
The contract secures sheltering and medical services for animals in Oak Park and continues the city’s existing animal-control arrangements for 2026.
