Pine County declines 323‑acre donation, will keep dialogue open with donors and state

The Pine County land advisory committee briefed the board on an offered donation of roughly 323 acres that carried restrictive easements. Committee members and staff said the easement language would prevent the parcel from qualifying as a memorial forest and would leave the county without payment in lieu of taxes (PILT) for the acreage.
County staff and advisory members noted that most of the stand was damaged and that gravel deposits on the parcel could not be accessed under the proposed restrictions. Given those limitations and the county’s existing adjacent memorial forest holdings, the committee recommended declining the donation while keeping communications open with the donor and with partners such as the Public Trust for Public Lands and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
A motion to decline the donation while maintaining dialogue and exploring other parcels passed on a roll call vote.
Commissioners said the county remains open to other donation or acquisition options that better fit county management priorities.
