The Wayne County Board of Education approved Budget Amendment No. 1 at its Jan. 5 meeting, adjusting multiple funds after the district’s June budget resolution and recording a community donation of $30,000.
Budget specialist Miss Rouse told the board the state funds amendment totals $9,649,879.29, an increase the district submitted as Revision 39 to the state. She said the amendment also includes a $35,000 increase in local current-expense projections, a federal grant increase of $671,124.16, and a local capital outlay amendment of $1,000,670 plus $200,000 from fund balance for modernization projects. The fund identified as “fund 8” received an amendment of $2,248,196.59, which Rouse said includes $1,297,136 in fund-balance appropriations earmarked for safety and security, campus revitalization and phone-system modernization.
“We did have some funding changes that we need to amend and for the board approved,” Miss Rouse said while walking the board through individual fund totals, adding that the school food service fund (Fund 5) remains unchanged at $11,173,909.93.
Board members sought a brief clarification about the capital-outlay figures and the portion coming from fund balance; Rouse clarified that $1,000,670 is for renovation projects and $200,000 is a fund-balance appropriation for modernization.
Mister West moved to approve the amendment and Mister Henderson seconded. The chair called for a voice/hand vote; the motion carried unanimously.
Separately, the finance committee flagged a $30,000 donation from T-Mobile to Wayne County Public Schools, which committee members acknowledged in their closing remarks and sent to the full board for approval.
What happens next: The amendment will be submitted to the Department of Public Instruction as the district’s revised budget for the fiscal year; the board did not schedule additional hearings related to these changes.
