Council member Jaya told colleagues on Jan. 5 that her family is moving out of Ward 4 and that she will resign her seat once the details are finalized. She said she expects Feb. 2 to be her last meeting and that the mayor and city staff are working on a competitive appointment process to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the current two-year term, with an election to follow.
"My family is moving out of Ward 4 ... I am going to have to resign," Jaya said, adding that she does not plan to leave Urbana and intends to remain involved in community work, including serving on the alternate response task force. She asked residents of Ward 4 to watch for application information and encouraged anyone interested to consider applying for the short-term appointment.
Mayor Williams and fellow council members thanked Jaya for her service at the meeting. The mayor and staff said they will provide information about the appointment process and timeline; the record shows staff (city administrator White and the city clerk) are involved in preparing that process. No appointment date was set during the Jan. 5 meeting.
