Linn County to solicit bids to demolish old jail after review of mold study

Linn County commissioners agreed Jan. 5 to solicit competitive bids to demolish the county's old jail after reviewing prior inspections and a mold study.
Unidentified Speaker 4 (Staff member) told the commission that the county will publish a demolition solicitation, run the advertisement and hold a single walk-through so prospective contractors can inspect the site. "So we are gonna go out for bid to demo the old jail," Unidentified Speaker 4 said, adding the county would allow a bidder walk and set deadlines to collect proposals.
Commissioners asked staff to locate and circulate a previously completed mold study for the old jail so the board and potential bidders could confirm what materials must be removed or salvaged before demolition. Unidentified Speaker 2 said some items inside the building, including a generator, would need to be identified and removed prior to work.
Unidentified Speaker 4 said the county would run the notice and wait an appropriate bid period, describing a timeline that would allow advertising in January and opening or reviewing bids in February. Commissioners asked staff to return with a firm calendar and to include any salvage-list items for final acceptance when bids are considered.
The decision to solicit bids does not itself authorize demolition; commissioners said they will return to the board to open and accept a bid and to finalize any list of items county staff needs to remove before work begins.
