Council approves 14 banner designs for 'For the Love of Gilroy' public art program

The City Council approved the Arts and Culture Commission recommendation to award 14 designs for the "For the Love of Gilroy" public art banner program. Staff said the commission evaluated 52 designs submitted by 32 artists, determined 32 designs were eligible and ranked the submissions; 14 banner designs were recommended for award. Each selected design will receive $500 for intellectual-property rights, for a total initial award amount of $7,000. Staff estimated production costs at roughly $70 per banner and said an unveiling event is planned for Feb. 20.
During discussion Councilmember Hilton urged the council to consider advancing additional minors into the top 14 to increase youth representation; several councilmembers expressed deference to the Arts and Culture Commission’s ranking and ultimately voted to approve the commission’s list as recommended. The motion to approve the awards passed 7–0.
Staff indicated that if any of the top 14 designs do not result in a rights purchase, staff will proceed down the ranked list to make awards. Councilmembers encouraged ensuring the program is included in work plans and budgets and suggested future consideration of category-based awards to provide more opportunities for younger artists.
