Council hears updates on college-and-career center, community-center memberships and Mitchell student eligibility

At the Jan. 5 council meeting a Board of Education representative presented metrics from the New London High School college and career center (class of 2024): 183 graduates, 112 enrolling in college or university (including 53 community-college students), 23 seniors in a manufacturing program, three who joined the military, and 45 students receiving longer-term assistance from the college-and-career center. The presenter noted a jump in the full-year graduation rate from 58.6% to 76.6% in recent years.
During public comment, Jessica McCready (44 Lincoln Ave.) thanked staff for outreach on community-center membership counts, asked for more detailed reporting on the membership numbers that accompany an agenda letter (2,400 members was cited in an email), and asked whether Mitchell College students are eligible for discounts or reduced rates and how many Mitchell students are included in the 2,400-member figure.
Councilors responded that Mitchell College has been a planning partner for the community center and that some students receive reduced rates but the exact terms should be confirmed. Council asked Director Felix Reyes (economic development) or the mayor’s office to report back with details on how many memberships are Mitchell-affiliated and the cost-sharing arrangement.
The council expressed appreciation for rising graduation rates and asked staff to provide follow-up detail on community-center membership breakdowns for the public record.
