Jaren Fried, the newly appointed superintendent of the Anaheim Union High School District, addressed the AUHSD community in a districtwide message, introduced himself as an alumnus of the district and set out priorities for his tenure. "I am deeply honored to serve as the next superintendent of the Anaheim Union High School District," Fried said.
Fried said his appointment is a "full circle" moment: he grew up in the district, returned to work as a teacher, and later served in campus and central-office roles. He told listeners he has worked as an assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent of human resources and assistant superintendent of educational services.
He outlined several priorities he said the district will continue to pursue: centering student voice and civic engagement, supporting whole-child development, and expanding "real world readiness" through career pathways, performance task assessments and a capstone program. "Our people are the heart of this district," Fried said, adding that he intends to "build on that strength together."
Acknowledging pressures facing public education, Fried said the district must contend with enrollment shifts, budget uncertainty and a national climate that at times questions the work of public schools. Still, he said, the district is positioned to respond. "I believe Anaheim Union is uniquely positioned to meet this moment, not with fear, but with courage, clarity, and unity," he said.
Fried stressed a collaborative leadership style. "This will not be top down leadership," he said. "It will be done hand in hand with our teachers, classified staff, counselors, site leaders, union partners, family and community partners, and most importantly, our students." He pledged to listen, plan and lead with transparency and responsibility.
Quoting management author Simon Sinek, Fried framed his approach to leadership: "leadership is not about being in charge. It's about taking care of those in your charge." He closed by thanking the community for its trust and, on behalf of the board of trustees, wishing staff and families a "happy, safe, and healthy new year."
The remarks were an introductory message to the AUHSD community; no votes or formal board actions were recorded in the address.
