Somers previews 2026–27 draft calendar; adoption scheduled Jan. 20

An administrator presented the Somers Central School District’s draft 2026–27 academic calendar at the Jan. 6 board workshop and said the board will formally adopt the calendar at its Jan. 20 meeting.
The presenter explained the calendar must meet New York State constraints (the Regents schedule and required instructional hours) and noted Somers builds in five professional learning days so the district reaches the district total of 185 days (180 student days plus five professional learning days). The first of five professional learning days is proposed for Aug. 31 with staff orientation Aug. 31–Sept. 1; the first day of school for students would be the Wednesday preceding Labor Day (Sept. 7 in the draft example year).
The presentation also addressed religious and federal holidays that affect scheduling: Rosh Hashanah in the draft falls on a weekend, Yom Kippur is built in on a Monday, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving follow standard placement, and Juneteenth observance was noted (district closure on June 18 as the federal holiday falls on June 19). The presenter said the district consulted neighboring districts and Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES calendars to align regional scheduling and to avoid shortening other breaks.
Contingency planning for emergency closings was explained: April 8 and June 1 are the first makeup days; if additional makeup days are required the calendar would adjust by using the day before Memorial Day and other built‑in options. The presenter noted spring and Memorial Day recess dates are subject to change in the event of multiple emergency closings and cautioned the public against making irrevocable plans for those recesses until the calendar is final.
The board was told the draft would be posted on the district website after the Jan. 20 adoption vote. No formal calendar vote was taken at the workshop.
Next steps: the calendar will be presented for official adoption at the Jan. 20 Board of Education meeting and posted online thereafter.
