Human Relations Commission reports grants, condemns KKK flyers; city launches winter dashboard

Lindsay Jo Douglas, chair of the Human Relations Commission, briefed Bowling Green City Council on the commission’s 2025 activities and upcoming events.
Douglas said the commission increased its allocation from $1,600 to $2,500 last year and restructured its grant process with an application window and scoring rubric. She said the commission awarded five spring grants totaling $1,100 and received nine fall applications now under review. The commission also gave the Drum Major for Peace award to Brown Bag Food Project and awarded that recipient $200. Douglas said the commission held a special meeting to "condemn the KKK flyers that were distributed in the community." She invited council and residents to a Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute event on Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. at the library and said a multi-faith breakfast is planned for April 14 at the Veterans Building in City Park.
Assistant municipal administrator Amanda Gamby described a new public-facing winter dashboard, spelled aloud in the meeting as "s k n o w b g" (she said "The k is silent"). Gamby said the dashboard displays GPS-tracked plow routes, snow-emergency status, live camera views of major corridors, road-surface temperature sensors and sidewalk-clearing reminders. "We use this data internally for decision making on how and where to prioritize snow removal efforts," she said, noting public-works staff will use the dashboard to decide when and where to use salt, brine and plow crews.
In related reports, staff said the city will participate in local events to mark America's 250th anniversary, with a kickoff on Jan. 8 at the Wood County District Public Library atrium featuring the mayor and other local guests.
