Summary
Staff reported asbestos removal in the back third of 202 East Main, said the building's contractor has not yet engaged an engineer, and the council scheduled a Feb. 2 update requiring the contractor to provide engineer contact information or appear in person. Hitt Construction was awarded the demolition bid and access arrangements were discussed.
City staff gave a status update on 202 East Main and related maintenance work. Staff said Huron Environmental LLC removed asbestos from the back third of the building and supplied photos and a report; the materials and removal were described in a contractor letter from Rodney Moore. Staff said the contractor had not yet secured an engineer to inspect the building and provided a timeline estimate that an inspection and engineering report could be available within roughly a month.
Council members expressed frustration that prior deadlines agreed with the contractor were not met and directed staff to place the item on the Feb. 2 agenda. Council required that, by Feb. 2, the contractor either have an engineer under contract and provide the engineer's name and contact information or appear in person to explain the lack of progress. The motion to schedule the follow-up carried unanimously.
Staff also reported Hitt Construction was awarded the bid for demolition work, and staff will coordinate access with the adjacent property owner (referred to in the meeting as Andy) so the city can remove trees and Hitt can proceed. Staff reported repairs on municipal systems including a boiler repair and plumbing fixes in restrooms, and noted internal concerns about asbestos on building piping that prompted plans to seek inspection quotes.
