The Cottage Grove Village Board on Jan. 5 adopted two ordinances to correct and streamline statutory references in the village code.
One ordinance corrects outdated citation numbers that no longer point to the right state statutes; board members and staff said the change simply updates references and does not change the content of local ordinances. An immediately related ordinance authorizes staff to update citation numbers in the village code when state statutes are recodified, so routine renumberings do not require repeated board action.
Unidentified Speaker 6 told the board the first measure corrects “statute numbers that were changed by the legislature” and that “this doesn't change any content of the ordinance; it's just strictly updating statute numbers.” Board members asked whether the staff-update authorization would be exercised only with legal review; trustees were told routine coordination with legal counsel is expected.
Severson moved approval of the first ordinance; Murphy seconded. Murphy moved approval of the second ordinance; Severson seconded. Both ordinances were adopted by voice vote.
Officials said the pair of measures is intended to reduce administrative delays when state recodifications happen and to keep local code cross-references accurate. The ordinances take effect according to the village’s usual ordinance-adoption rules.
