Jaren Fried, introduced to staff as the incoming superintendent of the Anaheim Union High School District, used his first remarks to frame his priorities and leadership approach for the district.
"I am deeply honored to serve as the next superintendent of the Anaheim Union High School District," Fried said as he opened the address, calling his appointment a "full circle" moment because he grew up in the district and later returned as an educator and administrator. He recounted roles throughout the system, including teacher, assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent positions, and said those experiences shaped his view that "our people are the heart of this district."
Fried said he wants AUHSD to be a "destination district" that centers "student voice, civic engagement, whole child development, and real world readiness" through expanded career pathways, performance task assessments and a capstone program. He emphasized access and family engagement, saying the district must ensure "every student has access to opportunity" and that "every family feels welcomed and heard."
Acknowledging what he described as real challenges — "enrollment shifts, budget uncertainty, [and] a national climate that all too often questions our work" — Fried said he believes the district is positioned to meet those issues with "courage, clarity, and unity." He stressed his intention to avoid top-down leadership and instead "work hand in hand with our teachers, classified staff, counselors, site leaders, union partners, family and community partners, and most importantly, our students," promising to listen, plan and lead transparently.
Quoting leadership author Simon Sinek, Fried said leadership "is not about being in charge. It's about taking care of those in your charge," and presented that ethic as his guiding promise to the district. He closed by thanking the community for their trust and, on behalf of the board of trustees, wishing staff a "happy, safe, and healthy new year."
The remarks outlined broad priorities and a collaborative leadership style; Fried did not announce specific policy changes or timeline for new initiatives during this address. The district's next public steps or any formal proposals were not specified in the remarks.
