Gardner City Council elects George Tyrus as president, temporarily adopts council rules

The Gardner City Council elected Councilor George Tyrus as council president for 2026 in a roll-call vote on Monday, Jan. 5. Councilor Hegland nominated Tyrus and praised his prior service and impartiality; the nomination was seconded and, after a motion to close nominations, the clerk announced that Tyrus received eight votes and was elected.
Councilor Tyrus excused himself from the nomination discussion before votes were taken, citing prior advice from the attorney general's office. After the vote, the ceremonial gavel was turned over to the newly elected council president.
Later in the meeting, Councilor Hegland moved to temporarily adopt the council rules until a new set is established so members would have time to review proposed changes. The motion, seconded by Councillor Durnalowitz, was put to a roll call and carried with the votes recorded as 'yes.' Councilors were invited to submit proposed changes through the finance committee process.
The council closed the meeting with brief remarks, a recognition of a local high school basketball milestone, and a motion to adjourn that passed by voice vote.
