Residents raise taxes, legal settlements and health center concerns during public comment

Several members of the public addressed the board during public comment at the Jan. 6 meeting. William Batchell identified himself and commented on property taxes and utility cost pressures, noting the impact of Act 1 tax limits on local taxation and offering anecdotal observations about rising electric bills.
Jason Lanier asked the board for clarity about the district’s decision to accept a second-highest offer on a movie-lot sale and asked for more transparency about monthly legal settlement payouts, which he said appeared high based on his review of public documents. Lanier also questioned whether the district health care center has achieved its stated objective of slowing insurance-cost growth.
Superintendent Dr. Bauer responded to the movie-lot question by saying the district weighed multiple factors — including parcel counts, proposed unit counts, settlement timelines and community fit — rather than selecting the highest dollar offer. On health care costs, Dr. Bauer said the district’s health center is focused on primary care and has reduced primary-care costs and employee absenteeism, even though total self-insured health costs have increased in line with national trends.
Board members acknowledged the questions and said the administration would continue to provide detailed information in future discussions and committee meetings.
