The commission discussed an anticipated legislative and public-health committee meeting to consider a change in the dental practice act that would let dental assistants take X-rays without the dentist physically present in the office, provided the practice uses digital systems capable of transmitting images to the dentist.
Chair Peter Katz said the meeting was moved to tomorrow and that he, Craig Fontaine and Mark planned to attend; Kathleen Garrity of the Connecticut State Dental Association was also expected to join to indicate CSDA support. The proposed change would rely on digital X-rays and immediate electronic transmission so a dentist could remotely view images "and make a decision," the chair said, arguing the change would help solo practitioners who otherwise must leave meetings or other duties to review X-rays.
Craig Fontaine noted technological changes and the ability to share images instantly, while other board members cautioned the statutory change could face resistance. "They may not wanna change the dental practice act," one board member said, noting that changing statutory language can take significant time. The chair described this as a "small step" in a longer process and said the commission will seek clarity on whether the upcoming meeting is open to the public.
The commission did not take formal action on the proposal at this meeting; members agreed to attend the committee discussion and to follow up with staff about the invitation and meeting logistics. The meeting was scheduled for 03:30 the next day per the chair's update.
